Learning through Language: The Changing Role of Teachers

St. Peter’s School, Barcelona, 3rd and 4th March 2017

www.stpeters.es/LTL17

 INVITATION

St. Peter’s School believes international collaboration among institutions, schools and universities to be of the utmost importance nowadays to promote and improve professional development and build bridges between interested parties. After having worked and collaborated with national and international universities and schools for many years, we have decided it is time to create a forum in which to share our experiences.

The event is supported by the Col·legi de Doctors i Llicenciats en Filosofia i Lletres and the Asociación de Colegios Privados e Independientes (CICAE). It will be the first edition of the conference Learning Language: the changing role of teachers.

Within a complex global society, traditional views on language teaching are under review at all levels of the educational establishment. This conference aims to create a forum in which to share different approaches and aspects of classroom practice. The intention is that educators can draw upon examples of successful learning experiences, in order to reflect upon and find meaningful responses for their own particular contexts.

This meeting will be an excellent opportunity to exchange different points of view with colleagues and discover new international experiences.

The conference has the support of the Spanish Ministry of Education, as well as the presence of many universities and schools with whom St. Peter’s School has been working.

We encourage you to attend the conference and participate in this first edition of LtL: the changing role of teachers and contribute to the improvement and innovation in teaching through language.

During the conference we will be focusing on the following areas:

How do we deal with linguistic diversity? Can a challenge become a resource? How can we create relevant educational experiences for an increasingly multi-modal environment? To what extent are different modes of communication, including visual, gestural, digital and programming incorporated into traditional alphabetical/oral texts? How can mathematical or musical language enhance communicative experiences? Which approaches to teaching optimize use of both academic and social language acquisition? What are the effects on the role of the teacher? Who is the teacher? How can we best serve the teaching profession through initial training and continuing professional development?

GENERAL THEME AND SUBTHEMES

The general theme of the Conference is Learning through Language: the changing role of teachers.

However, during the conference we will be focusing on the following subthemes:

  • How do we deal with linguistic diversity?  Can a challenge become a resource?
  • How can we create relevant educational experiences for an increasingly multi-modal environment? To what extent are different modes of communication, including visual, gestural, digital incorporated into traditional alphabetical/oral texts? How can mathematical or musical language enhance communicative experiences?
  • Which approaches to teaching optimize use of both academic and social language acquisition? What can cross-curricular project-based learning contribute?
